Superficial Lump / Foreign Body
Ultrasound is a painless and effective means of examining the skin and adjacent tissues. Ultrasound used high frequency sound wave to asses the structures of the lesion or tissues and Doppler ultrasound to assess the blood flow in the region.
You will be asked to expose the region of interest. This can usually be done by lifting or lowering the clothes in that area. If the sonographer required you to change to image the area effectively, a gown will be provided and she will leave the room while you change.
Warm, clear gel will be applied to the skin in the area being scanned. In addition a sheet of firm gel (stand-off pad), will be placed on the skin, to optimise the ultrasound images. The sonographer will gently move the probe over the area of interest as the during the examination, recording images of the tissues as she proceeds.
